You cant update the AMI of an instance without replacing it with a new instance. Typically you simply run the operating system updates - yum update / apt update upgrade / windows update.
The keyboard-interactive authentication requests for more information than just a username and password. The server sends back a label for each piece of information it needs, and it can also provide a description of the login form. The server can also specify which inputs are secret and which are not.
AMIs must not contain passwords, authentication keys, key pairs, security keys, or other credentials for any reason. AMIs must not request or use access or secret keys from users to access AWS resources.
This error means that the SFTP client and the server could not agree on a common authentication method. The server only accepts public key authentication, but the client either doesnt have a valid SSH key pair, or doesnt provide it correctly.
