hey welcome back you got here just in time to hear the big secret the key to great writing is great revision [Music] as you know dont remember from our video on the writing process revision is an important part of any writing project in fact in many writing classes its often required but revision is not just about doing extra work or turning the same paper in twice so even if its not for a grade revision should still be a part of your writing process to put it in perspective i had a poetry teacher once who said that there were probably a handful of students in class who had enough raw talent to write a better first draft than he could write however and i may be paraphrasing he went on to say that he could revise circles around any one of us that teacher understood that a draft was only the first step in a longer writing process he knew that his first draft was never going to be the best possible version of that poem and he wanted us to understand that revision was always going to be

Writing is a process that involves at least four distinct steps: prewriting, drafting, revising, and editing. It is known as a recursive process.
Revision is often defined as the last stage in the writing process (prewriting, writing, and revision). Sommers (1982), on the other hand, sees revision as a process of making changes throughout the writing of a draft, changes that work to make the draft congruent with a writers changing intentions.
At a minimum, revising consists of four interconnected, interlocking and circular steps: reading your text. diagnosing problems. generating solutions deciding on what needs to be done and in what order, and. re-writing.
What does it mean to revise? Revision literally means to see again, to look at something from a fresh, critical perspective. It is an ongoing process of rethinking the paper: reconsidering your arguments, reviewing your evidence, refining your purpose, reorganizing your presentation, reviving stale prose.
4 Ways to Revise as You Write Revise Your Previous Pages. Look at what you wrote the day before (or during your last writing stint), and do a quick edit. Try the 20,000-Word Step Back. Keep a Journal. Take Advantage of All Your Tools.
Types of Revisions Continuity, Correctness and Closure. Tone, Pace, and Dialogue. Character Rapport. Typos and Grammar. Formatting. I learned the hard way, the value of doing each of these necessary revisions, one step at a time. This was only after self-publishing 2 novels, and having taken the tasks for granted.
How to Revise First, put your draft aside for a little while. Time away from your essay will allow for more objective self-evaluation. Check the focus of the paper. Is it appropriate to the assignment prompt? Get feedback. Think honestly about your thesis. Examine the balance within your paper. Proofread.
Revision is a time to smooth out the flow of your thoughts through transitioning between your paragraphs, to make sure that each of your paragraphs are balanced with supporting evidence and your own original thought, and to look at sentence level edits like grammar and sentence flow in the final stages.
