The next step in the writing process is to revise our paper. This means making our writing better by going through it and looking for ways to improve it. For example, changing words like "happy" to more descriptive ones like "ecstatic" can enhance the overall quality of the writing. Revision is key to making our writing more effective and engaging.

Revision means making structural changes. Drafting is usually a process of discovering an idea or argument. Your argument will not become clearer if you only tinker with individual sentences.
It is the continuing process of reassessing your arguments, reviewing your evidence, refining your purpose, and reorganizing your presentation. Some writers often consider addressing punctuation and spelling as the revision process, but thats actually proofreading.
Revising gives you the chance to preview your work on behalf of the eventual reader. Revision is much more than proofreading, though in the final editing stage it involves some checking of details. Good revision and editing can transform a mediocre first draft into an excellent final paper.
For many published authors I know, myself included, a completed novel takes them about 10, thats right, 10 drafts, and at least a year of real editing.
Once youve finished your rough draft, its time to get ready to revise. The revision process will be more effective if you follow a few basic steps beforehand. First, take a break from writing after the first draft.
Every writer has a process that works for them. Some swear by three drafts; others proclaim 10 to be the magic number. But the truth is, there is no magic number. As you develop your own process, consider the genre youre writing in, your writing experience, and your reason behind why you want to write a novel.

Its called the three draft revision process. Yes, after your first draft, youre going to need three more drafts. But its easier than that may sound. In your first draft, that very first draft youve written of any paper, go in and look at big picture problems.
During revising, you add, cut, move, or change information in order to improve content. During editing, you take a second look at the words and sentences you used to express your ideas and fix any problems in grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure.
Revision literally means to see again, to look at something from a fresh, critical perspective. It is an ongoing process of rethinking the paper: reconsidering your arguments, reviewing your evidence, refining your purpose, reorganizing your presentation, reviving stale prose.
