Grotesque was the first form of sans serif type. It appeared in the early 19th Century, and had a somewhat irregular and awkward form (hence the name). The more refined evolution of this style, popular in the mid 20th century, became known as Neo-grotesque.
Go to Format Font Font. + D to open the Font dialog box. Select the font and size you want to use. Select Default, and then select Yes.
The font began life as Neue Haas Grotesk when it was created by Max Miedinger in the late 1950s. It was renamed Helvetica in 1960 to be more appealing and marketable to an international audience.
Helvetica, also known by its original name Neue Haas Grotesk, is a widely used sans-serif typeface developed in 1957 by Swiss typeface designer Max Miedinger and Eduard Hoffmann.
There are, in fact, two versions of Helvetica. The first one is the original design, which was created by Max Miedinger and released by Linotype in 1957. And secondly, in 1983, D. Stempel AG, Linotypes daughter company, released the Neue Helvetica font design, which was a re-working of the 1957 original.
In 1957 Max Miedinger made Helvetica. In fact it was called Neue Haas Grotesk, but for marketing reasons the name was changed to Helvetica in 1960. Miedinger based his design on other Grotesks, one of which was Haas Grotesk (1912).
