Youll need an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number from the IRS its called ITIN for short If you have a tax filing requirement, federal tax withholding or are eligible for an allowable tax benefit, but you arent eligible for a Social Security number. Go to irs.gov/itin, where you can learn more about it. First, youll complete a Form W-7. Youll mail this to the IRS along with the required identification documents and your federal tax return. Check out the instructions for Form W-7 for a list of acceptable documents. Only send original identification documents or a copy certified by the agency that issued it. You also have other options. Instead of mailing in original documents like your passport, you can work with a docHubing acceptance agent. These agents are authorized by the IRS to authenticate your documents. The TIN Match costs $1.00 per request to match a TIN/Name combination with the IRS database.
What you will need to complete the form Your new TIN. If you are updating multiple TINs, you will need to complete a separate form for each one. Your National Provider Identification (NPI) number. A valid and complete W-9 associated with the new TIN (file size cannot exceed 2 MB) A current list of all service locations.
TIN Matching is a free service offered by the IRS through its e-services tool on the IRS website. After registering on the site, payers can enter up to 25 names and their TINs to get an immediate verification response or up to 100,000 names and their TINs to get a verification within 24 hours.
Do ITINs need to be renewed? Yes, ITINs need to be renewed, and the process is not automatic. The IRS requires that ITIN holders renew their ITIN if it is expiring or has expired. If your ITIN has not been used on a federal income tax return for three consecutive years, it will expire.
There are two TIN matching options offered through e-Services: Interactive TIN Matching verify up to 25 name/TIN combinations and results will be received immediately. Bulk TIN Matching verify up to 100,000 name/TIN combinations and results will be received within 24 hours.
You can visit a local IRS office or write a letter explaining that you have now been assigned a SSN and want your tax records combined. Include your complete name, mailing address, and ITIN along with a copy of your social security card and a copy of the CP 565, Notice of ITIN Assignment, if available.
TIN Matching assists the payer in determining if the payee TIN/name combination contained on their Form W-9, matches the TIN/name combination contained in IRS tax filing records.
2 = TIN entered is not currently issued. 3 = TIN and Name combination do not match IRS records. 4 = Invalid TIN Matching request. 5 = Duplicate TIN Matching request.
