The On-Line Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) Matching Program is a free web-based tool offered by the IRS through e-Services and was established for payers of reportable payments subject to the backup withholding provisions of section 3406 of the Internal Revenue Code.
Error: Incorrect Payer Name or TIN A corrected form is NOT required to correct an incorrect payer name (yours or your clients name/company name) or the payers taxpayer identification number (TIN). Instead, you may write a letter containing the following information. Name and address of the payer.
A1: A Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) is a nine-digit number, which is either an Employer Identification Number assigned by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or a Social Security number assigned by the Social Security Administration (SSA).
Penalty for failure to furnish a TIN: If a payee fails to furnish a correct TIN to a requester when it is properly requested, the payee may be subject to a penalty of $50 for each such failure.
The penalty amount depends on whether the employer takes action to correct the error and when the action takes place. A penalty of $310 per form (for 2024) applies to employers that do not make corrections or make corrections after August 1 of the year in which the form was required to be filed.
This means the Payer has to issue a B-notice to the Recipient. Later, you may receive a penalty notice if the TIN discrepancies are not fixed. The penalties for TIN mismatch can be up to $260 per occurrence.
