An AFP tumor marker test is a blood test that measures the level of AFP (alpha-fetoprotein) in a sample of your blood. Its usually used to help diagnose certain types of cancer and to check how well treatment is working. AFP is a protein that the liver makes when its cells are growing and dividing to make new cells.
Generally, an AFP level between 0 ng/mL to 10 ng/ml or even up to 40 ng/mL can be normal for adults But normal levels vary, so talk with your healthcare provider about what your results mean for you. An extremely high level of AFP in your bloodgreater than 400 ng/mLcould be a sign of liver tumors.
Results are given in nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL). Here is the normal range: For adults: less than 40 ng/mL. At 15 to 21 weeks gestation: 10 to 150 ng/mL.
Alpha Fetoprotein (AFP) Quad Screen, Penta Screen, Test Summary DisorderNormal Screen

Higher than normal AFP levels may mean your baby has an increased risk of having a neural tube defect, such as: Spina bifida, a condition in which the bones of the spine dont close around part of the spinal cord. Anencephaly, a condition in which the brain does not develop properly.
The following conditions may lead to elevated AFP levels in non-pregnant females or males: Hepatocellular cancer. Metastatic liver cancer. Liver cirrhosis. Hepatitis. Germ cell tumors. Yolk sac tumor. Ataxia-telangiectasia.
Maternal serum AFP levels rise from the normal non-pregnancy level of 0.20 ng/mL to about 250 ng/mL at 32 weeks gestation. If the fetus has an open neural tube defect, AFP is thought to leak directly into the amniotic fluid, causing unexpectedly high concentrations of AFP.
