What is an MRO?

Overview. A Medical Review Officer (MRO) is a person who is a licensed physician and who is responsible for receiving and reviewing laboratory results generated by an employer's drug testing program and evaluating medical explanations for certain drug test results.

Does the MRO have to contact you first?

(a) When, as the MRO, you receive a confirmed positive, adulterated, substituted, or invalid test result from the laboratory, you must contact the employee directly (i.e., actually talk to the employee), on a confidential basis, to determine whether the employee wants to discuss the test result.

What does it mean when your drug test is in MRO?

The Medical Review Officer (MRO) process is when a non-negative result comes back from the lab. The MRO will: Review the result with the candidate to determine if they have any prescriptions which would account for the positive drug analyte. Verify the prescription with the pharmacy.

How long does it take to hear from MRO?

The sample's transit alone can take 24-72 hours. And while the MRO receives the initial results fast digitally, it could take them up to 96 hours to confirm test results if the donor is difficult to reach.
