How to prepare a wood deck for stain application: If a deck is new, we recommend waiting at least 90 days before staining and sealing the wood structure. Pressure-treated lumber or smooth milled cedar needs to cure three to six months prior to the staining process.
Water-based stains need to be stripped off before you apply a new finish, while oil-based stains can be recoated after you use a deck cleaner. To test the stain: Apply a small amount of deck stripper to a small area on your deck. Let it sit for about 15 minutes, then wipe it off with a cleaning rag.
Without waiting for the wood to dry, stain and sealant would not penetrate the wood properly, diminishing its ability to protect the wood from weather damage.
You will want to wait a few days before you start staining at least 24 hours is recommended, but you can also try the sprinkle test mentioned above. Youll definitely want to make sure the lumber is dry before staining. Freshly treated lumber will not absorb stain like it should unless it has had time.
The new stain you are applying over the old stain should be compatible. For instance, if its an oil-based stain, apply another oil-based stain. If its a water-based stain, apply another water-based stain. Incompatible stains can lead to poor adhesion or blotchy and uneven finish.
Before you apply stain, wait 4-8 weeks after your new deck is built. Start your project by sweeping away any leaves or other debris.
Is staining a previously stained deck possible? Yes! With the proper prep work and deck staining knowledge, you can successfully stain a deck that has already been stained.
Know how long to wait before staining pressure treated wood. Most stains need 24 to 48 hours to dry.
