The /sys/seal-status endpoint is used to check the seal status of a Vault.
Vault encrypts secrets using 256-bit AES in GCM mode with a randomly generated nonce prior to writing them to its persistent storage. By enabling seal wrap, Vault wraps your secrets with an extra layer of encryption leveraging the HSM encryption and decryption.
To disable seal wrapping, set disablesealwrap = true in Vaults configuration file. This will not affect auto-unsealing functionality; Vaults root key will still be protected by the seal wrapping mechanism. It will simply prevent other storage entries within Vault from being seal wrapped.
Sealing Vault places it into a state where it accepts only unauthenticated instructions such as those for status and unsealing, and is often a common first step in responding to a security incident, for example. An operator with sufficient privilege can seal Vault using the following methods: The /sys/seal API.
Heat, time, and pressure. The perfect combination of these three factors is essential for strong seal integrity and strength in packaging. Maintaining seal integrity throughout the packages life cycle is important to guarantee high product quality upon opening.
The Bank-Vaults Init and Unseal process Encrypts the received and keys with the configured KMS key. Stores the encrypted and keys in the cloud providers object storage.
Unsealing. The unseal process is done by running vault operator unseal or via the API. This process is stateful: each key can be entered via multiple mechanisms from multiple client machines and it will work. This allows each shares of the root key to be on a distinct client machine for better security.
In this state, Vault is configured to know where and how to access the physical storage, but doesnt know how to decrypt any of it. Unsealing is the process of obtaining the plaintext root key necessary to read the decryption key to decrypt the data, allowing access to the Vault.
The /sys/seal-status endpoint is used to check the seal status of a Vault.
By default, Vault uses a technique known as Shamirs secret sharing algorithm to split the root key into 5 shares, any 3 of which are required to reconstruct the master key. The root key is used to protect the encryption key, which is ultimately used to protect data written to the storage backend.
