Five kinds of caulk are used in general home construction acrylic, butyl, oil-base, silicone and urethane. Those created for the log home industry usually are acrylic (water-based) or urethane-based.
Customers ask: Can we use silicone caulk around the sink and wood countertop? The answer is Yes. You will want to finish the countertop completely and wait 5-7 days for the finish to cure before using the silicone caulk.
Apply a good quality, siliconized latex caulk (not pure silicon) into the check, bringing it out close, but not even with the surface of the log. Skim off the excess caulking with your finger or a putty knife, making sure the caulking makes a strong, consistent contact with the top and bottom of the crack.
When chinking, water is your best friend. You will want to use water and a spatula or foam brush to go over your work. As you apply your chinking you will want to go over it in order to clean up your mistakes and smooth your chinking out to ensure that it is adhering to the logs. A tip is to have two buckets of water.

Since 1981, Perma-Chink Log Home Sealant has proven itself on thousands of chinked and chinkless style homes to become the most widely applied chinking in the world. Its simply the best log home chinking by every measure: longevity, appearance, performance and ease of application.
While it may seem like an easy solution, we do NOT recommend filling the checks or cracks in the logs with caulk. Over time, with the log movement, the caulk will fail along these checks and leave a hairline crack between the wood and caulk, allowing water to seep into the checks.
Use wood caulk to seal up those cracks and gaps in wood, or even to fix damage and wear and tear. There are plenty of uses. Not only that, but it will give the wood strength and integrity at those points.
