When is a building permit required? The International Building Code exempts certain structures from needing a building permit if they are less than 200 square feet and unconditioned space. Exempted structures do not require a building permit from the County but must comply with all King County code requirements.
A building permit for detached one and two-family units, dwellings or townhouses, as defined in the California Residential Code, and their accessory structures, shall expire two years after the date of permit issuance. A Building Permit for all other projects shall expire four years after the date of permit issuance.
Construction permits typically expire 18 months after the date of issuance. However, you can renew your permit before its expiration date or reestablish it after the expiration date. You may only apply to renew your permit permit within the 30-day period prior to the permits expiration date.
