Charles Zona (CZ): Hello, and welcome to another McCrone Group webinar. My name is Charles Zona, and today we are happy to welcome Doug Meier. Doug is going to talk to us about X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, otherwise known as XPS. Before we get started I would like to give you a bit of Dougs background. Doug is a senior research scientist with McCrone Associates. He specializes in surface sensitive spectroscopies, such as Auger electron, X-ray photoelectron, infrared reflection absorption, thermal desorption, and low-energy electron diffraction. Doug was awarded the U.S. Department of Commerces Silver Medal for his work in the development of conductometric chemical microsensor array technology for the detection of chemical warfare agents. He also has over ten years of micro beam analysis experience prior to joining McCrone Associates. Doug will field questions from the audience immediately following todays presentation, and this webinar is being recorded and will be available o

There are a few universally accepted methods of preparing powdered samples for XPS. Of these the favoured method is to press the powder into clean, high purity indium foil. Alternatively, the powder may be dissolved in a suitable solvent and then drop cast onto the surface of a clean silicon wafer.
XPS requires high vacuum (residual gas pressure p ~ 10−6 Pa) or ultra-high vacuum (p < 10−7 Pa) conditions, although a current area of development is ambient-pressure XPS, in which samples are analyzed at pressures of a few tens of millibar.
Hydrogen and helium are missing from the table and are essentially impossible to detect by XPS. He does not readily form solid compounds and its 1s orbital has a tiny cross-section for photoemission.
XPS can be used to analyze the surface chemistry of a material after an applied treatment such as fracturing, cutting or scraping. From non-stick cookware coatings to thin-film electronics and bio-active surfaces, XPS is the standard tool for surface material characterization.
XPS is used to provide information about the elemental composition of the coatings. The XPS spectrometer is used to obtain a survey spectrum, from which the elements present can be determined. Individual spectral peaks are then examined at higher energy resolution to give information on chemical state.
How to Analyze XPS Spectra Data The X-Axis: Peak Position. The Y-Axis: Peak Intensity. Overlapping Peaks. More than One Elemental Peak. Analysis of Haze on a Polyimide Substrate. Passivation Integrity of Stainless Steel.
How to interpret the data it generates Peaks from the XPS spectra give relative number of electrons with a specific binding energy. The shorter the peak, the less electrons represented. ... The greater the binding energy, the greater the attraction of that electron to the nucleus.
Typical samples for XPS are 5 mm to 10 mm square and up to 4 mm thick.
X-ray Photoelectron Spectrometry (XPS) helps scientists understand the surface chemistry of materials, and it can used to explore nearly every element, with the exception of hydrogen and helium.
Typical samples for XPS are 5 mm to 10 mm square and up to 4 mm thick.
