In most cases, an abnormal Pap test is a result of: A human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. A sexually transmitted infection (STI or STD), such as herpes or trichomoniasis. A bacterial or yeast infection.
Large amounts of folic acid10 mg per dayhave been shown to improve the abnormal Pap smears of women who are taking birth control pills. Folic acid does not improve the Pap smears of women who are not taking oral contraceptives.
Certain things may interfere with a Pap test including: Menstruation. Use of things, such as vaginal creams, jellies, medicines, or spermicidal foams, for 2 to 3 days before the Pap test, as these substances may alter the pH of the cells or hide abnormal cells.
If your cervical dysplasia is more severe (CIN 1 or CIN 2), your healthcare provider can remove the abnormal cells that may become cancerous or destroy them. These procedures may include: Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) uses a small, electrically charged wire loop to remove tissue.
