whats the best dpi to print your photos at Ive been printing for master photographers for over 20 years and Ive heard a lot of different answers on this and it seems to be a place people really get confused a lot and the technology is changing so what was the correct answer in the past may not be the correct answer for today so I decided to do some tests I make my prints on a canon pro 4000 printers so to answer that question for my specific printer I decided to make some 8 by 10 test prints for my test I picked a file thats about a hundred fifty mega pixels of resolution so that I could print it some extremely high resolutions and from that file I started making a by ten test prints first I have an RA for print is a reference point and then I made prints on the Canon at 150 dpi 200 240 300 400 500 600 750 900 and then finally 959 point 5 5 6 dpi which was as big as I could print that file and a surprising thing happened every time I gave the printer more resolution the print looks

DPI stands for dots per inch, and PPI stands for pixels per inch. The higher the DPI or PPI, the more detail will be visible in your printed image. To get the highest possible print quality, you should use an image with at least 300 DPI or PPI.
This means that the more dots per inch (dpi), the higher the print resolution. For example, a 300 dpi printer can print 300 dots per inch of page space, whereas a 600 dpi printer can print double that amount, creating a much higher quality print.
Bigger and Better Resolution The higher the dpi the better the resolution and the better copy/print quality. For example, 1200 X 1200 dpi will give you better resolution or copy/print quality than 600 X 600 dpi, thus giving you better copy/print quality and better half tones.
600 DPI printing simply means that the printer compresses 600 dots horizontally as well as 600 dots vertically for every square inch of the card. This allows users to print ultra-high resolution pictures, micro-text, OCR codes, and 1D 2D barcodes.
Bigger and Better Resolution The higher the dpi the better the resolution and the better copy/print quality. For example, 1200 X 1200 dpi will give you better resolution or copy/print quality than 600 X 600 dpi, thus giving you better copy/print quality and better half tones.
For a letter or business document with graphics, 300 dpi will look fine. If its a handout for the board of directors, 600 dpi does the trick. For the average photographer, 1200 dpi is excellent. These specs are within docHub of most printers on the market.
Most businesses consider 600dpi and higher to be a high-resolution image or print. High-resolution images require more memory to store and can take longer to scan. Storing high-resolution images can quickly fill a hard drive or server. Many desktop printers cant reproduce high-quality and high-resolution images.
It depends, in fact, on what you are printing and what material is used. A higher resolution might be needed for glossy photos or images with lots of details that need to be crisp. Then 600 DPI could be a better option. At the same time, a lower value, for example, 100 dots per inch, should be enough for a poster.
