General revision requires attention to content, organization, style, and readability. These four main categories should give you a template from which to begin to explore details in depth.
Revision Defined Revision means just what it says: a re-vision. To revise is to see again, to rethink your original essay. It does not mean simply to fix the first draft, identifying grammar or mechanical errors or modifying sentence structure. It is a deeper process.
It helps to look at the topic sentences of each paragraph so you dont get sidetracked with the details from supporting sentences. If reorganizing still doesnt fix the problem, consider adding a new paragraph or section. Revising isnt just about changing whats already there; its also about adding whats missing.
It is the continuing process of reassessing your arguments, reviewing your evidence, refining your purpose, and reorganizing your presentation. Some writers often consider addressing punctuation and spelling as the revision process, but thats actually proofreading.
A rough draft can take weeks or many months to edit. If you are a professional writer, you tend to review each page numerous times. The work often needs to sit for several days between rounds of editing. Letting the pages cool allows you to see things you cannot see in the first round.
Examples of revise in a Sentence Noun that paper needs one more revise, and then I think its ready to turn in Verb We have to revise our plans because of the delays. I would like to revise my estimate.
Sometimes it means shifting the order of your paper to help the reader follow your argument, or to change the emphasis of your points. Sometimes it means adding or deleting material for balance or emphasis. And then, sadly, sometimes revision does mean trashing your first draft and starting from scratch.
Anything after first draft can be called a revision or a next numbered draft. The draft is the first cut, with all the typos and misspellings. The revision is after you proofread and fix the mistakes.
