Lots of writers use an outline to organize their thoughts before they begin writing. But an outline can also be useful after youve written a draft and are ready to revise. This particular kind of outline is known as a REVERSE outline. No, not like that. A reverse outline is a kind of record of what youve already writtenwhich may not be exactly what you intended to write. This can help you get back on track and fix any problems with your papers organization. It can also show you new directions that your writing might take into previously unexplored territory. Heres how it works. Say youve written a paper about your universitys traditions. As you read over what youve written, identify what each paragraph is focused on. You can either write this on a separate document or just jot it down in the margin. Writing out the focus of each paragraph or section in this way will allow you to see any disconnects, gaps, or overlap. For instance, you might realize that one of your sentences in

An outline organizes the information gathered through research into a skeleton version of the body of a report. The outline should show how the writer intends to support. The central ideas, concepts, and themes of the paper. Main topics are shown through. Upper-case roman numerals.
Reverse outlining is exactly what it sounds like: a process whereby you take away the supporting writing and are left with a papers main points or main ideas, sometimes represented by the papers topic sentences.
Creating a Reverse Outline: Start with a complete (recommended) or partial draft. Develop the outline using the topic sentences of each paragraph. If you dont have topic sentences, summarize each paragraph in one sentence, and list those. Number the list for referencing purposes.
A reverse outline should go paragraph by paragraph. Read one paragraph at a time and write the main idea of each paragraph in the margins of your paper (remember that for your first paragraph, the main point should be your thesis statement!!!) Then list these points, paragraph by paragraph, on another piece of paper.
However, a reverse outline gets its name by being written after the paper it outlines. Whereas a regular outline is a tool to help organize your thoughts before you begin to compose, a reverse outline is a way of revealing how you organized your thoughts while you wrote.
Reverse outlining is extracting an outline from an already written text and is often used to evaluate the structure of an already existing text.
A reverse outline should go paragraph by paragraph. Read one paragraph at a time and write the main idea of each paragraph in the margins of your paper (remember that for your first paragraph, the main point should be your thesis statement!!!) Then list these points, paragraph by paragraph, on another piece of paper.
Your reverse outline provides a bullet-point view of your papers structure because you are looking at the main points of the paper you wrote. Experienced writers, especially when writing longer papers about a complex subject, need ways to test their drafts for the logical sequence of points: its structure.
