Hi, Im Jessica from Scribbr! In the last video, we identified themes and gaps for the literature, now were moving onto step three of writing a good literature review, outlining your literature reviews structure! Now that youve worked out the connections and relationships between the sources, we can structure the literature reviews outline. Lets recap our topic: social medias impact on the younger generations body image. Here are 4 common approaches to structure the literature review. Try to analyze patterns, turning points, and debates that have shaped the direction of the field over time. Give your own interpretation of how and why certain developments occurred. For example, you might start by discussing an older study from 2008 about body image and media. Then youd explain how, over time, mass media like m

A reverse outline should go paragraph by paragraph. Read one paragraph at a time and write the main idea of each paragraph in the margins of your paper (remember that for your first paragraph, the main point should be your thesis statement!!!) Then list these points, paragraph by paragraph, on another piece of paper.
Creating a Reverse Outline: Start with a complete (recommended) or partial draft. Develop the outline using the topic sentences of each paragraph. If you dont have topic sentences, summarize each paragraph in one sentence, and list those. Number the list for referencing purposes.
Reverse outlining follows a two-step, repeatable process: In the left-hand margin, write down the topic of each paragraph. Try to use as few words as possible. In the right-hand margin, write down how the paragraph topic advances the overall argument of the text. Again, be brief.
A reverse outline can help you: Determine if your paper meets its goal. Discover places to expand on your evidence or analysis. See where readers might be tripped up by your organization or structure.
Reverse outlining is simply making an outline AFTER an essay has been written. For every paragraph, write the main idea or main argument in a small number of words in the margin next to that paragraph. This process allows you to see the structure or progress of an essay in a quick and clear way.
To make a reverse outline: Read over your essay and write down a phrase that captures what each separate paragraph discusses, one line per paragraph. It should look like a list. Then consider how your newly articulated thesis relates to each and every paragraph.
Does this work for that particular paragraph (sometimes it can depending on the length and focus of the paragraph)? Please note that outlines are meant to be flexible, so if your current outline doesnt 100% match the original outline THIS IS OKAY because some changes are good!

Your reverse outline provides a bullet-point view of your papers structure because you are looking at the main points of the paper you wrote. Experienced writers, especially when writing longer papers about a complex subject, need ways to test their drafts for the logical sequence of points: its structure.
