In SharePoint Online or On-Premises, versioning is enabled in the List Settings or Library Settings screens by clicking on the Versioning settings link. An interface is provided to let you control how many versions youd like to retain. The user must have the Manage Lists permission capability to enable versioning.
Versioning is on by default in SharePoint libraries, and off by default in SharePoint lists. Versioning needs to be turned on to see the version history option on menus or in ribbons. To turn on version history, see Enable and configure versioning for a list or library.
There can be up to three current versions of a file at any given time: the checked-out version, the latest minor or draft version, and the latest published or major version.

Click Edit. The New Document Version dialog expands to reveal all versions of the document. In the Versions list, select which version snapshot you want to make the active version. Click Change.
The revision number is the number of times the document has been saved. That means it should correspond to the Date Modified field in the file manager, sometimes called Date Last Saved. (Note that using Save As resets the revision number to 1 in the new file.)
Just navigate to the library or list where you want to use versioning and open List Settings or Library Settings. Once you are in the settings menu, click Versioning settings. You will see a section for Document Version History, where you can tweak the versioning preferences for your SharePoint library or list.
In software development, versioning allows development teams to keep track of changes they make to the project code. The changes may include new functions, features or bug fixes. Minor changes can also be tracked in a similar manner.
This number cannot be changed. Versioning SharePoint in Microsoft 365 requires versioning for Libraries; SharePoint Server allows you to select No Versioning as an option.
Change the numbering in a numbered list Double-click the numbers in the list. The text wont appear selected. Right-click the number you want to change. Click Set Numbering Value. In the Set value to: box, use the arrows to change the value to the number you want.
