Table legends (also called table titles) will almost always be quite short and be placed above the table. Any detailed information is given below the table, in the footnote. For submission, tables usually are placed at the end of the manuscript following the figure legends page, with one table per page.
How to Write a Legend: Step-by-Step Set the story in todays world. Change or add plot details. Change a few main events. Change the gender of the hero or heroine. Change the point of view (example: Tell the legend of St. Write a sequel. Write a prequel. Develop an existing legend into a readers theatre script.
Sometimes the figure caption is considered the title and the figure legend refers to the accompanying explanatory text. Both terms generally seem to be used relatively interchangeably.
Generally the figure legend should include: A title. The materials methods involved with the presented figure. Results, though this isnt always applicable. Any other miscellaneous details such as explaining abbreviations or image scale.
Figure and Table Legends Place captions above the table and align to the left (typically). Do not forget to end the name of the figure with a period. Place captions below the figure. Use titles for both figures and graphs in oral presentation slides and posters.
An effective legend is the key to help a figure stand alone. The title should describe what the figure is about. The methods include all (and no more than) the necessary details to understand the figure without referring back to the body text. The results show the key findings as seen in the figure.
Table Legends: These are captions for tables with a single phrase or sentence. Figure Legends: These are captions for figures which give overall information about the figure represented and are usually longer than table legends.
