Click the cell that contains the data that you want to edit, and then click anywhere in the formula bar. This starts Edit mode and positions the cursor in the formula bar at the location that you clicked. Click the cell that contains the data that you want to edit, and then press F2.
To edit or format an index entry, change the text inside the quotation marks. To update the index, click the index, and then press F9. Or go to References Update Index.
Select Add Column Index Column. The default behavior is to start numbering the first row at 0. Alternatively: If you select the arrow and select From 1, you can start numbering the rows at 1.
If you believe that the data is present in the spreadsheet, but MATCH is unable to locate it, it may be because: The cell has unexpected characters or hidden spaces. The cell may not be formatted as a correct data type. For example, the cell has numerical values, but it may be formatted as Text.
A #REF! error can occur when a MATCH is found, but the INDEX array is not big enough to include that row. For example, if there are 10 rows in the MATCH lookuparray, but only 5 rows in the INDEX array, a #REF! error will be returned for any MATCH in the 6th to 10th position.
If you are using INDEX as an array formula along with MATCH in order to be able to retrieve a value, you will need to convert your formula into an array formula, otherwise you will see a #VALUE! error. Solution: INDEX and MATCH should be used as an array formula, which means you need to press CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER.
A common error with Index Match is flipping the syntax of the function. For example, you may switch the values of the lookup and return columns. If you find this happens to you regularly, add a quality assurance step to your process by checking the data you enter to ensure its correct each time.
The table you index needs to be the same height as your row index , and the same width as your column index . Problems are often due to marking the entire table but leaving out an empty row/column header in the row index or column index . This mistake will often give you an off-by-one error.
