The revision number is the number of times the document has been saved. That means it should correspond to the Date Modified field in the file manager, sometimes called Date Last Saved.
Revision numbers are names that uniquely identify file and item versions. Any version of a file or item (created when checking in a modified file or item) can be assigned a revision number, either automatically during a workflow transition or manually by a user with sufficient rights.
Change a data validation condition Click the control whose data validation you want to modify. On the Format menu, click Data Validation. In the Data Validation dialog box, click the condition that you want to change, click Modify, and then make the changes that you want.
When you highlight changes as you work, Excel marks any revisions (such as changes, insertions, and deletions) with a highlighting color. Click Review Track Changes, and then click Highlight Changes. In the Highlight Changes dialog box, select the Track changes while editing check box.
Click the cell that contains the data that you want to edit, and then click anywhere in the formula bar. This starts Edit mode and positions the cursor in the formula bar at the location that you clicked. Click the cell that contains the data that you want to edit, and then press F2.
In the first cell of the range that you want to number, type =ROW(A1). The ROW function returns the number of the row that you reference. For example, =ROW(A1) returns the number 1. Drag the fill handle across the range that you want to fill.
You can change the Version number of Excel file by right-clicking the file and then selecting Properties Details and then editing the Version number field.
Add versioning to an Excel document Create a new table in SQL Server and call it eg DocumentVersions. Add two columns to the table: a DocumentName and a LatestDocumentVersion.
