On your Mac, use Desktop Dock settings to change the appearance of the Dock, and to choose settings for the desktop, Stage Manager, widgets, windows, and Mission Control. To change these settings, choose Apple menu System Settings, then click Desktop Dock in the sidebar.
Keep in mind that if you click the Close button in the top-left corner of an apps window, the window closes, but the app remains open (a small dot below the apps icon in the Dock indicates that the apps open).
The dots under applications on your Macs Dock mean that the apps are still running, even if you cant see any of the windows open on your desktop. This is similar to having apps open in the background on an iPhone. On your iPhone, these apps need to be closed manually, and on your Mac, you have to do the same thing.
4. Reset the Dock In Terminal, type this command: defaults delete com.apple.dock; killall Dock. Press Return. Wait for the Dock to restart. Quit Terminal.
Only one privacy indicator dot is shown at a time. For example, if both the microphone and a camera are in use, you only see a green dot. When you open Control Center, the top of the window may contain a field that shows which apps are using your microphone, location, camera, or system audio.
Why is there a black dot under Finder on the Mac? As we have seen, Finder on the Mac is always open, as it is part of the operating system. On the Mac, available Apps are marked with a black dot below them. Thats why Finder on the Mac always has a black dot under it.
After youve rebooted in Recovery Mode and entered the system-override suppress-sw-camera-indication-on-external-displays=on command in the Terminal, the new option available in System Settings under Privacy Security for the microphone / camera will allow you to turn the privacy dot on and off for external displays
Only a tiny black dot beneath a programs icon tells you that its openand you can even hide that, if you want. (Choose System PreferencesDock, and turn off Show indicators for open applications.) Apple has made it as easy as possible to like the Dock.
