A comma splice error occurs when sentences or independent clauses are improperly connected by a comma alone. Examples of Comma Splice Errors: The clouds were dark, we thought it would rain. I bought a coat, however, it did not fit. Correcting Fused Sentences and Comma Splices.
There are three ways to fix a comma splice. You can add a conjunction, change the comma to a semicolon, or make each independent clause its own sentence.
A semi-colon is probably the most appropriate remedy for your comma splice when the following two conditions hold: (1) the logical connection between the two independent clauses is already clear, and (2) the ideas represented in the two clauses are very closely related.
To avoid a comma splice you can do one of several things. You can 1) make each clause its own sentence, 2) you can join the clauses with a semicolon instead of a comma, or 3) you can replace the comma with a conjunction like and, but, because, or although.
Fixing Comma Splices Because the clauses on either side of a comma splice are independent, the error can be fixed by replacing the comma with a period or a semicolon. e.g., I am drinking a lot of coffee today. I was up too late last night.
Solution 1: Use a period. The simplest way to fix a comma splice is to separate the two improperly joined sentences. Simply replace the comma with a period.
Alternatively, in the Replace With textbox just hit Ctrl+Enter and that will insert a newline. The whole panel will expand a bit to accommodate the extra line(s).
In the Editor pane, click Settings. For Writing Style, select Grammar Refinements . Scroll down to see all of the options available, and select or clear the rules you want. The settings apply to all the documents that you edit, not just the current one.
