Solution 1: Use a period. The simplest way to fix a comma splice is to separate the two improperly joined sentences. Simply replace the comma with a period.
To avoid confusion, use commas to separate words and word groups with a series of three or more. Example: My $10 million estate is to be split among my husband, daughter, son, and nephew. Omitting the comma after son would indicate that the son and nephew would have to split one-third of the estate.
Using an introductory phrase to introduce a new sentence or phrase such as an adverb often requires a comma. Although he was hot, he refused to take off his coat. First and foremost, we need to address its origins. Sadly, my grandpa couldnt come.
Lets start with the fact that unless a name or title is the last word(s) in a sentence, it can either be used with no commas at all, OR with a comma both before and after. It is incorrect to place only one comma before the name or title. Incorrect: My friend, Jane has a lot more gardening experience than I do.
(Don?t forget the commas after first, firstly, first of all, at first.) As with at first, in the beginning introduces a situation which is in contrast with a later situation.
The following words usually have a comma immediately after them when they begin a sentence. Many adverbs that end in ly and transitions at the beginning of a sentence need to be followed by a comma, too. first (2nd, etc.) Finally, a comma is used to separate a participial phrase from an independent clause.
1. Use a comma to separate independent clauses. Rule: Use a comma before a coordinating conjunction (and, but, yet, so, or nor, for) when it joins two complete ideas (independent clauses). He walked down the street, and then he turned the corner. You can go shopping with me, or you can go to a movie alone.
Use commas after introductory a) clauses, b) phrases, or c) words that come before the main clause. a. Common starter words for introductory clauses that should be followed by a comma include after, although, as, because, if, since, when, while. While I was eating, the cat scratched at the door.
