all right class today this video is going to show you how to recode a variable in excel first of all why would you want to recode a variable for interval ratio variable like age you might get a wide range of category its and its really hard to do analysis right based on each individual age so what we want to do is uh recode them into interval categories so perhaps from you know 18 to 29 from 30 to 39 from 40 to 49 so on and so forth so we can get a percentage of an age group rather than individual age so what i do like to do is go ahead and copy this data age into a new sheet because its just easier to read and once you do that we can um theres two functions i want to show you so you know if ive never worked on this data i want to know what the minimum number is you could put equal minimum parentheses and then select the column okay press enter so now we know that the minimum age in this survey is 18. you can also find out what the maximum is sorry equal max and then parentheses
