National Board Certification is the most respected professional certification available in education and provides numerous benefits to teachers, students and schools. It was designed to develop, retain and recognize accomplished teachers and to generate ongoing improvement in schools nationwide.
Designed to support ongoing professional learning and signal demonstration of performance over time, Maintenance of Certification requires you, as a National Board Certified Teacher, to document your professional accomplishments every five years in order to keep your Board certification current and valid.
Candidates can complete from one to four components a year. Candidates must submit all four components within the first three years of their candidacy. While it is possible to complete the process in as little as one year, there is a five-year window to achieve certification.
The current certification rate for National Board Certification is 71%. This rate is made up of over 24,300 educators who have achieved National Board Certification since 2017, out of over 34,200 candidates who have completed the assessment during that same time period*.
The certification process is a rigorous, challenging process that causes teachers to analyze their work. It is a powerful learning experience whether they achieve National Board Certification or not.
The National Board Certification Incentive Program in California went into effect July 1st, 2021 and grants $5,000 per year to teachers who have achieved National Board Certification and teach at a high priority school as identified by the California Department of Education.
Earning board certification is one of the highest honors that a physician can receive in their field of study. Make no mistake, the application process for becoming board certified is rigorous and requires the physician to have extensive training and expertise, while meeting numerous eligibility requirements.
