The Army Body Composition Program (ABCP) is a United States Army program that dictates height and weight standards for all Active Army, Army National Guard, and Army Reserve Soldiers; the ABCP is covered in Army Regulation (AR) 600-9.
Current Army BF retention standards are based on age (AR 600-9, 1986). Standards for men are 20 percent BF for ages 16-20 years, 22 percent BF for ages 21-27 years, 24 percent BF for ages 28-39 years, and 26 percent BF for ages 40 years and older.
Section 3326 of United States Code Title 5 states 180-Day Restriction on Department of Defense (DoD) Employment of Military Retirees: A retired member of the Armed Forces may not be appointed to a civilian position in DoD (including a non-appropriated fund position) within 180 days after retirement unless: the
Per AD 2023-08, all Soldiers who score 540 or more on the record ACFT, with a minimum of 80 points in each event, are exempt from the Army body fat circumference-based tape assessment. This policy applies to Soldiers who complete all six primary events; no alternative events are authorized.
Army Directive 2023-08 modifies the ABCP. All Soldiers who score 540 or higher on the record Army Combat Fitness Test, with a minimum of 80 points in each event, are exempt from the body-fat assessment.
The maximum allowable percentage of body fat for men ranges from 18 to 26 percent depending on service and age, while for women it ranges from 26 to 34 percent (See Table 2-3). Each of the services screens active duty personnel either annually or semiannually for fitness and compliance with weight-for-height standards.
Soldiers should be measured by trained individuals of the same gender. If a trained individual of the same gender is not available to conduct the measurements, a female Soldier will be present when a male measures a female, and a male Soldier will be present when a female measures a male.
