Building blocks including AutoText (Word 2007-2021) must be stored in templates. In Ribbon versions of Word, they can be stored in either dotx or dotm templates. For the template to have macros, it must be a dotm template and should not be stored in the Building Blocks folder if you want access to the macros.
Restoring or Recreating AutoText Entries Outside of Word, use the Windows Search feature to find the Normal. Instead of deleting the file, name it something else, such as OldNormal. Start Word. Choose Templates and Add-Ins from the Tools menu. Click the Organizer button. Make sure the AutoText tab is displayed.
Navigate to the Insert tab and click the Explore Quick Parts icon in the Text group. In the drop-down menu that appears, hover over AutoText. A list of AutoText entries appears; select the one you want to use.
AutoText entries are stored in templates; they are not stored in documents. When you create an AutoText entry it is, by default, stored in the Normal template. In the dialog box in which new AutoText entries are created you can specify where the entry should be stored, i.e., which template it should be placed into.
