hi my name is Jen --this unit from QA training this is part of a series of videos on how to use Excel more efficiently this particular video relates to the trace precedence tool a tool that you can use to determine where a formula is getting its values from lets open an Excel spreadsheet so I can demonstrate how the trace precedents tool works now its important to note you can trace the precedence of a cell with a formula in it for example in my current spreadsheet there should be a formula in cell D 15 that calculates the total of quarter 1 and if I want to determine if the formula in D 15 is actually referring to the correct range I can trace its precedents and I can do this by visiting my ribbon finding the formulas tab in the ribbon selecting the formula auditing group and then looking for the trace precedents tool as I click on trace precedents Excel will highlight all those cells that the formula in D 15 is referring to and in this example the formula in D 15 is referring to a

Select the worksheet you want to check for errors. If the worksheet is manually calculated, press F9 to recalculate. If the Error Checking dialog is not displayed, then click on the Formulas tab Formula Auditing Error Checking button.
The Trace Error button appears next to the cell in which a formula error occurs, and a green triangle appears in the upper-left corner of the cell.
On the Formulas tab of the Ribbon, under Error Checking, youll find an option called Trace Error. To use this feature, first select a cell that contains an error, then choose Trace Error.
Resolution Select the cell to which the arrow is pointing. On the Formulas tab, click Remove All Arrows in Formula Auditing group, and then click Remove Precedent Arrows.
Clicking the Trace Dependents button more than once will show all the cells that are related to the active cell that you are evaluating. To remove the tracer arrows, click the arrow next to the Remove Arrows button under the Formulas Auditing tool and click Remove Dependent Arrows.
The other way to find #NAME errors is by using the Find function. Under Editing, choose Find, or locate this by pressing Ctrl-F. In the Find what box, enter #NAME, and then choose either Find Next or Find All. You can then work through the errors.
On the Excel tab, go to the Formulas tab and locate the Trace Precedents tool under the Formula Auditing section. Next, click the Trace Precedents button and wait for Excel to audit the cells.
