Behavioural contracting is an intervention technique in which a client signs an agreement to make certain behaviour changes within a specified time, usually with explicitly defined rewards for adherence or success.
A contract may state, for instance, that When Johnny has earned 5 points on his Good Behavior Chart, he may select a friend, choose a game from the play-materials shelf, and spend 10 minutes during free time at the end of the day playing the game.
Behavior contracts do the opposite. They demoralize students and make them feel helpless to change the course of their academic life. Breaking rules and causing trouble then becomes not merely something they choose to dowhich can be fixedbut rather it becomes who they arewhich cant.
If your child follows the terms of the contract, your child gets a reward thats spelled out in the contract. For example, a reward could be extra computer time. And a week of good classroom behavior might mean a family movie night at home or a weekend sleepover. Behavior contracts can take many forms.
They consist of several essential elements that contribute to their effectiveness. In this section, we will explore three key components of a behavior contract: clear and specific goals, measurable and observable behavior, and reinforcement and consequences.
The components of a great behavioral contract Specific targeted behaviors. Expected consequences for breaking the contract. A track record of when a student has met the behavioral contract expectations. An expected contract duration. A celebration once students have met all expectations in their contracts.
These components include goal setting, reinforcement strategies, and consequences for behavior. By combining these elements, behavior contracts provide a structured framework for promoting positive behavior change in individuals with autism.
The teacher next meets with the student to draw up a behavior contract. The contract should include: a listing of student behaviors that are to be reduced or increased. As stated above, the students behavioral goals should usually be stated in positive, goal-oriented terms.
