Im Dan koukin author of these word books and this is todays 60 second word tip I have some very old word processing documents in my archives the software used to create these documents no longer exists and word doesnt recognize the format even some older Word documents cant be opened due to security concerns the secret is to open the document using a special text recovery feature its not perfect but check this out some in the open dialog box the keyboard shortcut is ctrl f12 for some reason see the files of type menu choose the format recover text from any file select a file from the list and any file shows up by the way which doesnt guarantee that theres text in the file but word tries to pull out whatever it can for this specific example heres a WordPerfect document from 1993 and you can see the text recovered its not pretty but there it is [Music]

asd. You can open it simply by double-clicking on it - the file will open in Word as usual and you can then use Save As to save it to the right location. If no file is found you need to find the Autosave file and copy it to the location shown when Recover is used.
These can be found via File, Open and clicking the Recover Unsaved Documents button found at the very bottom of the Recent File List. Open Word and select File, Options. In the Options dialog box select Save from the left hand menu. Note the AutoRecover files location.
In Word, select the File Menu, and then select Open. In the Files of type box, select Recover Text from Any File(.). Select the document from which you want to recover the text. Select Open.
Opening ASD Files Via Recent Documents Click File and Recent to access a list of recent documents. Click Recover Unsaved Documents. Each ASD document will open in Microsoft Word, Excel or another compatible Office application. Click Window and then click the name of the ASD file you want to display.
You can recover unsaved files through Temporary Files, AutoRecover Files, Document Recovery, Recycle Bin, and Data Recovery solutions.
Finding AutoRecovered files in Windows asd , where filename is the name of the document on which you were working: In Windows 7 and Vista, the file is stored in the \Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word folder ( username will be replaced by the authors username).
Method 2. Open ASD Files from Manage Document Option in Word In MS Word, click the File Info tab in the upper left corner. Click Manage Document and select Recover Unsaved Documents from the drop-down list. Also, on the Open Window, choose the ASD file you want and click Open to recover the ASD file.
C:\Users\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\UnsavedFiles.If you find any files that have the .asd extension, follow these steps: Open Word, and then go to File Open Browse. In the files of type list to the right of File name, select All Files. Right-click the backup file that you found, and then select Open.
