hi everybody i just wanted to jump on and make a quick video to show you how we get the look of a raw wood top without getting the yellow orange or red tones uh in the natural wood so if youre not sure what your wood would look like if you just sealed it with a clear sealer or used a wax um what you can do is strip it down sand it down to the bare wood and then apply a little bit of water to it and then youll get a sense of what the natural color of the wood is so stuart did a great job carefully sanding down the top of this malcolm dresser it is a wood veneer so it had to be sanded very carefully not to go through to the chipboard and i suspect im not going to love the natural color of the wood so what ive done this is just a wet paint brush with water and im just going to apply it to the top of the wood here so i can see what the natural tone of the wood is and that would of course be what it looks like once you apply some sort of clear top coat or sealer to it as you can see i

While some primer manufacturers and guides say it's possible, you should sand down your stained wood with 150 grit sandpaper for best results. When using sandpaper, your goal is just to make the surface rough enough for the paint to have something to grab onto. There's no need to strip the entire surface of the wood.
Lemon or vinegar The simplest way to remove a water stain is by rubbing it with lemon water or vinegar. Mix equal parts vinegar and water; or squeeze one lemon into a cup of water. Then, lightly scrub the solution over the stain, moving in the direction of the wood grain.
Removal is Not Always Necessary While it's never a bad idea to sand and strip old stain, doing so can certainly be time-consuming and challenging. In some cases, you can get away with leaving the previous coat as it is, as long as you perform the other necessary preparation steps, such as sanding and power washing.
Applying a second coat of stain to change the color is something you might try once, but the chances of success are not very good. A second coat of stain can cause other issues like peeling of the top coat(s).

Wipe down the wood to raise the grain. If you don't raise the grain now, the stain will raise it later. However, re-sanding to get the wood smooth again removes much of the stain. Let the wood dry, then sand with 180- to 220-grit paper.
Yes! In fact, applying stain over stain is a fairly simple process. It works especially well if you're applying a dark stain over a lighter stain.
Be advised that the color of your stain will be influenced by both the already existing stain and the new stain you apply, but this is typically going to make it darker, which is what we are trying to achieve unless the stain you are applying over the original stain is so light in pigment that it is almost clear.
Wax, oil and varnish are three materials that will protect your furniture and that you can easily apply at home yourself. All three options will maintain the most "natural" look of the furniture, preserving the grain of the wood without adding large touches of colour, as paints, lacquers, etc.
To avoid a yellowing wood finish, use a water-based polyurethane instead of an oil based polyurethane. The best water-based polyurethane is Minwax's Polycrylic, which is formulated for easy consumer use.
