You can restore your existing deck by applying a deck paint restoration product. Deck paint restoration coatings are thick enough to fill all cracks, knotholes, and splinters, and they provide a completely new textured surface that can last as long as 13 years without additional applications.
Removal is Not Always Necessary While it's never a bad idea to sand and strip old stain, doing so can certainly be time-consuming and challenging. In some cases, you can get away with leaving the previous coat as it is, as long as you perform the other necessary preparation steps, such as sanding and power washing.
The ideal way to fix a wood stain mistake is to sand the piece down to bare wood, and re-stain. However, this is time-consuming. Applying another layer of stain, painting the piece, or evening the piece with gel stain are other methods that could produce a satisfactory result.
As a general rule, your deck should be stained every 2-3 years. This can change, however, if you are in an area of high-humidity or especially volatile weather. The signs to look for when determining if you need deck staining are: The stain color of the wood is wearing off.
In general, an oil-based deck stain will last the longest, but it also depends on the type of wood, the weather conditions, and how long the deck has gone unprotected before staining.
About 1-2 months. Rough sawn cut wood does not need to weather. After the new wood has been cleaned, the wood will appear slightly darker. To restore the wood and neutralize the pH, use Restore-A-Deck Brightener to lighten it to its original appearance.
Wipe down the wood to raise the grain. If you don't raise the grain now, the stain will raise it later. However, re-sanding to get the wood smooth again removes much of the stain. Let the wood dry, then sand with 180- to 220-grit paper.

Give it a few more days to see if it improves. Another possibility is that the stain was old or came from a bad batch. In either case if the tackiness doesn't go away, wipe the wood down with mineral spirits or naphtha to remove most of the stain, let it dry thoroughly, then try again using a fresh can of stain.
Sanding each board opens up the pores in the wood, allowing the stain to absorb deeper and more evenly into the board or log. Start with a rougher, coarse grit by sanding it at 80 grit, and work your way up to 220 grit.
