I Received a Performance Improvement Plan; Should I Quit? If you were put on a performance improvement plan, its generally not a good idea to quit unless you find another job first. You can beat the PIP, even if it was secretly created to force you out.
On the manager side, Ive put a few people on PIPs. From my experience about 25% of folks survive a PIP. In one case, I was promoted into a manager roll I didnt really want, but was strongly encouraged to take.

Too often people hear only the or else portion of the message when theyre put on a PIP, but if the plan for improvement is constructed well and undertaken with a managers support, it is possible to survive and thrive in a company after completing one.
If youre put on a PIP, take time to process your emotions and understand the situation. Then, carefully review the documents and ask for a detailed plan of action that coincides with your growth at the company. It may help to seek the guidance of a mentor either within the company or a professional career coach.
If you can overcome the issues that have been identified, you may be able to salvage your job and your future with the organization. That assumes that the employer is entering into the PIP in good faith and isnt planning to fire you later on with the PIP as cover for potential legal actions.
Being put on a Performance Improvement Plan doesnt make you a bad employee. It may be that this job isnt the right fit for you. And youre better off finding a job that challenges you and pays better. The problem is that very few people know how to find a job like that.
An effective performance improvement plan should: Document existing performance concerns. Encourage constructive dialogue. Offer solutions to any identified issues. Support underachieving employees with actionable steps. Give the employee a clear understanding of how to improve their performance.
