If the layer you are trying to use the history brush tool on is hidden, you will receive an error message. Turn the layer visibility back on by clicking on the empty box icon next to the layer thumbnail. Once the layer is visible, you can use the history brush again.

You can store a text record of the edits that were made to a file in the metadata with the History Log. (Found in Preferences General).
The History Brush tool allows you to restore parts of an image to an earlier history state by painting over them. Choose Window History to open the History panel. In the History panel, click the far-left column of the state that you want to use as the source for the History Brush tool.
Right-click on the PSD file, then select Recover previous version. From the list, find the file you need and click the Restore button. Now go to Photoshop and find the recovered PSD file here. Be sure to save it.
