A guaranteed restore point ensures that you can perform a FLASHBACK DATABASE command to that SCN at any time. Even the effects of NOLOGGING operations such as direct load inserts can be reversed using guaranteed restore points. A guarantee restore point must be manually deleted.
The difference between the two is that guaranteed restore point allows you to flashback to the restore point regardless of the DBFLASHBACKRETENTIONTARGET initialization parameter i.e. it is always available (assuming you have enough space in the flash recovery area).
What is a Restore Point in Oracle Database? A restore point is a name assigned to a system change number (SCN) in Oracle. An SCN is a number that uniquely identifies each new change to an Oracle database; this number is incremented whenever users commit a new transaction to the database.
There are two types of restore points in Oracle Database: a normal restore point and a guaranteed restore point. The differences are: Guaranteed restore points let you revert to the restore point regardless of the DBFLASHBACKRETENTIONTARGET initialization parameter.
A guaranteed restore point enables you to flash the database back deterministically to the restore point regardless of the DBFLASHBACKRETENTIONTARGET initialization parameter setting. The guaranteed ability to flash back depends on sufficient space being available in the fast recovery area.
Use the DROP RESTORE POINT statement to remove a normal restore point or a guaranteed restore point from the database. You need not drop normal restore points. The database automatically drops the oldest restore points when necessary, as described in the semantics for restorepoint.
To create a guaranteed restore point, you must have the SYSDBA , SYSBACKUP , or SYSDG system privilege. To view or use a restore point, you must have the SELECT ANY DICTIONARY , FLASHBACK ANY TABLE , SYSDBA , SYSBACKUP , or SYSDG system privilege or the SELECTCATALOGROLE role.
Now, in order to restore your database to the guaranteed restore point, follow the steps below: $ su oracle. $ sqlplus / as sysdba; SQL select currentscn from v$database; SQL shutdown immediate; SQL startup mount; SQL select * from v$restorepoint; SQL flashback database to restore point CLEANDB;
