Cash or property donations worth more than $250: The IRS requires you to get a written letter of acknowledgment from the charity. It must include the amount of cash you donated, whether you received anything from the charity in exchange for your donation, and an estimate of the value of those goods and services.

A tax receipt can be issued only in the name of the individual or organization that actually gave the gift. If the donation is made by a cheque written on a joint bank account, the tax receipt should be issued in both names on the cheque, and the receipt may be used by either party to claim a tax credit.
For any contribution of $250 or more (including contributions of cash or property), you must obtain and keep in your records a contemporaneous written acknowledgment from the qualified organization indicating the amount of the cash and a description of any property other than cash contributed.
You must prove the donation amount if you want to deduct it with one of these: Receipt. Bank or credit union statements. Canceled checks. Credit card statements.
