Restoring involves copying backup files from a secondary storage (backup media) to disk. This can be done to replace damaged files or to copy/move a database to a new location. Recovery is the process of applying redo logs to the database to roll it forward.
A log sequence number (LSN) represents the offset, in bytes, of a log record from the beginning of a database log file. It identifies the location within the log file of a specific log file record. LSNs are used by many components throughout the DB2®product to maintain database consistency and integrity.
Right-click on the desired database and select the Tasks - Back Up option. Change the Backup Type to Transaction Log and you're ready to go.
A number that uniquely identifies a set of redo records in a redo log file. When the database fills one online redo log file and switches to a different one, the database automatically assigns the new file a log sequence number.
Alternate solution to View SQL Server Log File Step 1: Open & launch the SQL Server Transaction Log Reader. Step 2: Click on Open to add .ldf and associated .mdf file. Step 3: Choose Online or Offline Option to Scan ldf file data to the software.
If the user is restoring a database using multiple backup files, NO RECOVERY option is used for each restore except the last. The RESTORE Database WITH NORECOVERY option puts the database into a 'restoring state' so that additional backups can be restored and no users can access the database in this state.
The log sequence number (LSN) value is a three-part, uniquely incrementing value. It is used for maintaining the sequence of the transaction log records in the database.
Log Sequence Number (LSN) : Log Sequence Numbers correspond to given position in the log files and typically incremented for each log record.
We can use RESTORE with NORECOVERY option using SQL Server Management Studio. Go to Options Choose the recovery state desired i.e. Leave the database non-operational, and do not roll back uncommitted transactions. Additional transaction logs can be restored. [RESTORE WITH NORECOVERY] and Click OK.
Right-click the database, point to Tasks, point to Restore, and then click Transaction Log, which opens the Restore Transaction Log dialog box. If Transaction Log is grayed out, you may need to restore a full or differential backup first.
