Light therapy has been around for more than 50 years. It was discovered by the Hungarian physician Endre Mester in the 1960s when scientific experiments with red lasers on rats led to hair growth and wound healing, ing to a research article published in December 2017 in the Journal of Biophotonics.
The modern science of phototherapy was inaugurated by Danish-Faroese-Icelandic physician, Niels Ryberg Finsen (18601904), who received the 1903 Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology, for his pioneering work on the therapeutic and physiological effects of light treatment from artificial light sources.
Near-infrared laser light had recently been shown to speed healing of wounds particularly those that were starved for oxygen by boosting the production of growth-factor proteins, collagen, and blood vessels.
In 1896, Dr. Finsen developed the first light therapy as a treatment for lupus vulgaris, a type of tuberculosis. Using electric light concentrated 15 times, he could treat an area of affected skin 2cm in diameter.
Phototherapy, also known as light therapy, is a common form of treatment that uses bright, ultraviolet (UV) lights on your exposed skin. Phototherapy can treat several types of skin conditions, including psoriasis and eczema.
From its roots in ancient Egypt, India, and Greece, through to medieval times, the modern renaissance in light as therapy was begun by Florence Nightingale who, in the 1850s, advocated the use of clean air and an abundance of sunlight to restore health.
Known as phototherapy, the use of light in medical treatment is producing surprisingly successful results in the treatment of a variety of ailments from topical infections and chronic wounds to autoimmune and chronic degenerative diseases, says Chukuka S.
