To lighten and read an old faded receipt, you can use a hairdryer or a light source to heat the thermal paper receipt and help you see the text or image on the receipt.
Unfortunately, there is no way to restore faded ink to its original state. Some chemicals are advertised to darken original inks, but they are often damaging to paper and conservators do not recommend them.
Apply heat gently applying heat to the receipt paper can also restore the thermal paper. You can use basic household devices like a hairdryer or a light bulb to apply heat. Faded numbers, text, or images will become visible after some minutes. Remember to apply heat only from the back.
Unfortunately, there is no way to restore faded ink to its original state. Some chemicals are advertised to darken original inks, but they are often damaging to paper and conservators do not recommend them.
Receipts are printed on thermal paper. This type of paper is chemically coated to produce characters and images when heat is applied to the surface. The paper itself is susceptible to UV light and heat and when exposed for a prolonged time, characters and images will fade.
Place the receipts in an area with extremely low exposure to temperature changes, heat, or moisture. Clean and non-oily hands can also reduce the chances of fading from thermal paper receipts.
Since this kind of paper is susceptible to heat and UV light, extended exposure to these elements will ultimately cause gradual fading. If you are in the mood for experimenting, place a receipt that you dont need under a hot iron for about 10 seconds. The heat from the iron will change the color of the paper to black.
