Will I need to be on crutches after surgery? Yes, but only initially and only for comfort. Full weight bearing is gradually increased as tolerated by the patient. It typically takes seven to 10 days after the procedure, until the patient is comfortable without the assistance of a crutch.
During ACL reconstruction, the torn ligament is removed and replaced with a band of tissue that usually connects muscle to bone (tendon). The graft tendon is taken from another part of your knee or from a deceased donor.
A torn ACL cannot be repaired by stitching it back together, but it can be reconstructed by attaching (grafting) new tissue on to it. The ACL can be reconstructed by removing what remains of the torn ligament and replacing it with a tendon from another area of the leg, such as the hamstring or patellar tendon.
For most people, it takes 2-9 months to fully recover from ACL surgery. A 2016 study of 80 amateur athletes found that on average, athletes returned to their sport after eight months.
Dont work your quadriceps early on because this can stretch the ACL graft. Stationery bike riding or lightweight leg presses are recommended during the first three months after surgery. These exercises strengthen the quadriceps while using the hamstrings to protect the ACL graft. Dont swim or run for five months.
After surgery, wounds are typically covered with gauze, cotton padding and an ACE bandage. This should be left in place for 2 days. After this, dressings may be removed and waterproof Band-Aids should be placed over the incision sites. Leave any steri-strips (adhesive paper strips over the incision) in place.
The most common symptoms of infection following ACL reconstruction are fever, knee effusion, loss of knee flexion, and pain. ing to Wang et al.,27 the median number of days after surgery for symptom presentation is 13.
By the end of the second or third week, patients usually walk without crutches. Sessions with a physical therapist usually begin seven to 14 days after surgery. During physical therapy, weight bearing is allowed if you did not have a meniscus repair.
