Insert a header or footer Go to Insert Header or Footer. Choose the header style you want to use. Add or change text for the header or footer. To eliminate a header--like deleting it on the title page--select it and then check the Different First Page box. Select Close Header and Footer or press Esc to exit.

Double-click the header or footer area to open the Header Footer tab. Select Link to Previous to turn off the link between the sections. Select Header or Footer and do one of the following: Choose Remove Header or Remove Footer .
Make sure that either the Hidden Text check box or the Show All Formatting Marks check box is selected. Either of these settings will make sure the hidden text appears on-screen. In the Printing Options section, make sure the Print Hidden Text check box is cleared.
Your header and footer are still there. You are not seeing them on your screen because you have hidden the white space. This is a Word preference or option.
In the open document, move the pointer to the top border of any page in the document. Double click when the icon appears to restore the top and bottom margins / headers footers.
If you havent saved a custom-made header or footer in Word, and cant access it in another document, re-create it from scratch. Select Insert, select Header or Footer, select the Blank option in the Built-In section and then add the text and design details to the header of footer area as needed.
On the Layout tab, under View, click Page Layout. On the Layout tab, under Page Setup, click Header Footer. Choose from a list of standard headers or footers by going to the Header or Footer pop-up menu, and clicking the header or footer that you want.
