over time flags can become frayed and torn from exposure to the wind and the outdoor elements flags in this condition need to be repaired to prevent further tearing to determine if your flag can be repaired or if it needs to be retired fold the flag in half and then at the point on the flag where the blue and the stripes meet fold it again the flag should not be square and the stripes should extend beyond the stars this is important so that the torn or damaged parts of the flag can be evenly trimmed off then sewn and hemmed you can see that this flag is repairable because enough of the stripes will remain after it is trimmed and sewn if the tattering on a flag is severe enough then it needs to be retired with this flag the part that needs trimming would cause the flag to be square this flag is not repairable also its color is quite faded which is another good reason to retire a flag this flag has already been repaired its color is still very good all the tattering has been removed and
