An access control list (ACL) is a list of access control entries (ACE). Each ACE in an ACL identifies a trustee and specifies the access rights allowed, denied, or audited for that trustee. The security descriptor for a securable object can contain two types of ACLs: a DACL and an SACL.
Basically, ACLs are used to make a flexible permission mechanism in Linux. From Linux man pages, ACLs are used to define more fine-grained discretionary access rights for files and directories. setfacl and getfacl are used for setting up ACL and showing ACL respectively.
The Restore-ACL cmdlet restores the security descriptor of a specified item, such as a file or a registry key.
If youre worried about the file permissions on your Linux system being changed, its possible to back up the file permissions of a certain set of files or directories with the getfacl command. You can then restore file permissions en masse by using the setfacl command.
ACL inheritance The inheritance flag gives you the granularity to specify whether the inheritance defined in an ACL entry applies to the current directory and its children or only to the subdirectories and files that are contained in the parent directory.
ACLs are stored in the part of an NTFS partition that does all the background plumbing - the MFT (Master File Table). The ACL does not follow a file around, since it is not a part of the file (just like the filename it is metadata). The file can cross partition type boundaries (NTFS-FAT), the ACL cannot.
