A prequalified welding procedures specification is a welding procedure that is exempt from the qualification tests required by a code or standard. Not all codes provide the user with the advantage of using prequalified welding procedures. Some that do are: AWS D1.
Pre-Qualified Welding Procedures are procedures that have been welded and tested previously by an industry specific group and are thereby deemed Pre-qualified. Eg. AS/NZS 1554 Part 1 only requires a macro to qualify the procedure if all requirements for prequalification are met.
D1. 5M and D1. 5 covers material and design of welded connections, stud welding, workmanship, qualification, fabrication, and inspection. This code was written jointly with AASHTO, AWS, and industry.
What is a WPS? A Welding Procedure Specification, or WPS, is a formal written document describing standard welding procedures. Like a recipe for welders, these procedures provide clear direction for your welders to make quality products that are up to code and industry standards.
Codes such as AWS D1. 1 (Steel), AWS D1. 3 (Sheet Metal) and AWS D1. 6 (Stainless Steel) permit the use of prequalified welding procedures (WPSs).
The welding process must be SMAW, SAW, GMAW (except short circuit), or FCAW.
Who Should Write the Welding Procedure Specification? A welding engineer or any knowledgeable and competent person in the welding metallurgy with appropriate experience can write a WPS. How to write a WPS? There is the standard form for the WPS in ASME Code Section IX (Form QW-482).
There are no major differences between the AWS D1. 1 and AWS D1. 5 Codes in Clause 7 Stud Welding.
