Medically reviewed by Elizabeth Denslow, OTR/L. Can a TBI get worse over time? The short answer is: yes, it can. Every brain injury is different and even though many secondary effects of a brain injury improve with time, others may linger and interfere with rehabilitation.
One prospective study of 330 severe TBI patients showed that younger patients (0–19 years of age) had a significantly higher percentage of good outcomes, lower mortality rates, and a reduced incidence of surgical mass lesions compared to adults (20–80 years of age) [11].
The brain injury patients were estimated to be around five years older on average than their real age. Head injuries are already known to increase the risk of age-related neurological conditions such as dementia later in life.
First, advanced age at the time of injury may result in less complete recovery compared to younger persons with comparable injuries. While the mechanisms of this phenomenon are not known, it may be due simply to less capacity for compensation or reduced cognitive reserves, with increasing age.
Can a TBI get worse over time? The short answer is: yes, it can. Every brain injury is different and even though many secondary effects of a brain injury improve with time, others may linger and interfere with rehabilitation. Survivors with long-term effects can often present signs of decline in their recovery process.
Effects of Increasing Age with Traumatic Brain Injury People who have had moderate or severe traumatic brain injury are known to have an increased risk of decline of cognitive abilities, and increased risk of dementia, later in life.
New research led by the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania shows that a single head injury could lead to dementia later in life. This risk further increases as the number of head injuries sustained by an individual increases.
Can a brain injury get worse over time? Yes it can, but it can also improve. Causes of decline after brain injury may vary, but there are certain approaches you can take to encourage recovery.
Two major factors place older adults at risk for greater incidence of TBI. First, as one ages, the dura becomes more adherent to the skull. Second, as part of routine management of chronic conditions, more older adults receive aspirin and anticoagulant therapies.
Anxiety and depression are common. Personality (mood) changes, mood swings, and difficulty controlling impulses can also be an issue. The challenges associated with life after a TBI and the emotional and personality changes that sometimes go along with it can also contribute to relationship difficulties.
