if youre inserted footnotes but maybe you dont like the size of the number so for example we have a little superscript 3 here maybe you want that footnote number to be bigger or perhaps you dont want to use superscript or maybe this text down here you want it to look a little different maybe you want to change the font or the size or the spacing you can do all that and the way we do that is we use word styles now if youve used word styles before or even if you havent theyre up here on the Home tab okay and youve got your heading Styles up here but word uses styles to display this little footnote and to make this text look good down here in your notes pane okay it uses some behind-the-scene styles for that so to get to those behind-the-scene styles were going to go to this little arrow and were gonna go down here to this manage Styles button and then we want to look for the footnote reference style so were gonna go ahead and choose alphabetical here and then find it in here t

Here are the steps to take: Place your cursor in the body text where you want the footnote superscript to appear. Select the References tab in the ribbon toolbar. Click Insert Footnote. Type your footnote ing to style. Repeat the process for every additional footnote.
By default the Footnote Continuation Separator is full margin width, but you can resize it by adding paragraph indents; right-click, choose Paragraph, and increase the Left and Right indents as desired. (Thanks to user Doug Popovich for providing this suggestion.)
To change the formatting of the footnote numbers, select the Footnotes Reference Style. If you want to change the formatting of the footnote text at the bottom of the page, select the Footnote Text Style. Click Modify, and then change the formatting options (font, size, and so on).
On the Insert menu, click Footnote. Under Location, click Footnotes or Endnotes, and then on the Footnotes or Endnotes pop-up menu, click the location that you want. Under Format, select the numbering options that you want, and then click Insert.
Thats due to the formatting of your Footnote Reference style. Use FormatStyle to change it.
Change the number format of note reference marks On the Insert menu, click Footnote. Under Format, on the Number format pop-up menu, click the option that you want, and then click Apply.
Word automatically formats footnotes in the Footnote Text style, which defaults to 10 pt. You need to modify that style. Press Ctrl+Shift+S to open the Apply Styles dialog. Type Footnote Text in the box and click the Modify button.
Footnotes/endnotes are double spaced, and the first line only is indented from the left margin. In addition to footnotes/endnotes, your paper will also have a bibliography: a list of all of the sources you cited in your paper, arranged in alphabetical order by last name of each author.
Getting superscripts/endnotes in Word Click the Insert Endnote in the style ribbon. Make sure the endnote and superscript number ended up where you wanted. If you need to change your endnotes from Roman numerals, click the little pull-down menu. Use the drop down menu to change your numbers, then click apply.
