Today, Im going to tell you how to get the best letters of recommendation for medical school. Obtaining letters of recommendation can be a hassle, but admissions committees highly value the third-party insight they provide. Therefore, obtaining strong letters of recommendation is a critical part of the application process. Your letter writers must submit their letter on your behalf. The AMCAS Letter Service enables letter writers to send all letters to AMCAS directly rather than individually to each school. AMCAS will accept letters of evaluation and distribute them to participating medical schools electronically.
Ideally, give the person three to four weeks, but never less than two weeks to complete the recommendation. Most faculty and staff are very busy and have numerous recommendations to write, so you want to be courteous.
Through your school: Most universities offer to store your recommendation letters, either through the career center, pre-health advising center, or a similar service on campus. Via an online third-party letter storage service (also called a dossier service), such as Interfolio.
5-6 weeks before recommendation is needed: Ask the professor either in office hours or by email if the professor is comfortable writing to recommend you for your given context, e.g. graduate school, a job, a scholarship. 3.
Give your letter writers as much time as possible, as they are extremely busy and have likely received plenty of other requests. We recommend two-three months. Set a reminder two weeks out from the due date. For more tips, check out our advice on How to Ask For Medical School Letters of Recommendation.
Do my recommenders have to submit their letters before the deadline? Recommenders are strongly encouraged to submit their letters by the deadline, but will still be able to submit after the posted date. The application deadline is provided to recommenders in the Letter of Recommendation Request email.
Request letters of recommendation at least one or two months in advance of your admissions deadline. Its important to ask in a timely manner to give recommenders plenty of time to write. Its also important to make the request personal.
The first step in requesting a letter of recommendation involves timing. Even for seasoned teachers and counselors, each individual letter takes time and thought to do well. I recommend asking your recommenders at least a month before your application deadlines. In some cases, even earlier is better.
