You may be asked to repeat your Pap test more often for a short period of time, for example every 6 months. This allows time to see if the abnormal cells change back to normal on their own. Your doctor may suggest a human papillomavirus (HPV) test. You may be referred for a special examination called colposcopy.
Typically, your doctor will use the Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP), or perform a cold knife cone biopsy as a minor surgical procedure. Be sure to always bring up any questions you may about you Pap test with your gynecologist.
Your doctor may recommend you have a Pap test more often than once every 3 years if you have: Cervical cancer or a Pap test that revealed precancerous cells. HIV infection. A weakened immune system due to an organ transplant, chemotherapy, or chronic corticosteroid use.
Following an abnormal Pap smear, your next step is additional testing. Dr. Tajzoy may suggest redoing the Pap smear to see if results come back the same. In addition to a retest, you can expect a thorough evaluation of your overall health.
If your Pap test is abnormal, follow up with your gynecologist immediately to discuss next steps. If the second, follow-up Pap test result is also abnormal, you might have a cervical biopsy, also known as a colposcopy.
Types of minor cell changes include: Atypical squamous cells (ASC). These are changes for which the cause is unknown. They may be caused by an HPV infection. Or they may be caused by inflammation, another infection, or atrophic vaginitis.
In most cases, an abnormal Pap test is a result of: A human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. A sexually transmitted infection (STI or STD), such as herpes or trichomoniasis. A bacterial or yeast infection.
